I am a Master of Human Rights student at Humphrey School of Public Affairs where I focus on social responsibility. Working in the intersection of business and human rights while having an undergraduate background in environmental sciences and policy drew me into Environmental Initiative. The collaborative approach with businesses to mitigate environmental issues to preserve communities rights to natural resources, clean air, clean water, green space, and more was attractive.
As a Somali immigrant, I know how an increase of droughts, famines, and other extreme weather patterns due to climate change are impacting vulnerable people around the world who have not contributed to global environmental degradation over the past century. I am passionate about creating an equitable future within thriving ecosystems so that these communities that are most impacted can thrive again.
To be making an impact on one of the most important issues of our generation brings me joy and satisfaction. Making positive environmental changes to the local Twin Cities and Minneapolis community in which I grew up in also brings me joy.
My inspiration comes from traveling and being in nature. It helps me recenter, relax, and keeps me grounded in what is important. To work in the environmental sector is to preserve the natural environment which inspires me to continue working in the environment so it’s a great cycle.
