Working for an environmental nonprofit has been a calling. Since my days working at Minnesota Environmental Fund, I have long admired the work of Environmental Initiative. I was drawn to the organization’s innovative approach to working on environmental issues. No other organization that I had heard of was doing the work EI has been doing.

Early in my career, I worked for a trail maintenance organization in Washington state and had the opportunity to travel throughout the state and see some of the most beautiful spots in our nation. I got to walk on trails and see amazing vistas that few people get to see in life. Working there changed my life’s trajectory, and I decided that what I wanted to do was protect the lands and the environment to give every person a chance to enjoy them.

My favorite quote, the one that inspires me the most in everyday life and in environmental work is one from Dr. Seuss’s book The Lorax: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

I believe that unless I get up every day and make choices that will improve our world, I’m not living up to my fullest potential. Unless someone like you and like me does something, nothing will get better. And we need our world to get better.
