I was eager to learn that Environmental Initiative had such a large emphasis on community. Furthermore, the work that they do with low-income communities and tackling air pollution, hit really close to home for me. I knew I had to be a part of this work. I am excited to see what the future has in store for me as I work alongside the EI team.
Growing up in Los Angeles, California, exposed me to a lot of rich culture, but also a lot of social and environmental injustice. I experienced, first-hand, the impacts of increasing levels of pollution in my city. I witnessed my family and community suffer at the hands of climate change. This lit a fire in me to fight back and make change in whatever way I could.
My work constantly reminds me about the communities I am fighting for. The communities in the Twin Cities, Los Angeles, and across the U.S. This, alone, brings me joy in my work and my life.
Music is one thing that always keeps me energized and helps me stay connected to my culture. I’ve been enjoying Natalia Lafourcade, a Mexican folklore singer. Her music brings me peace and encouragement every morning.
