Hi, everyone! My name is Danielle Jackson, and I’m the Environmental Initiative’s new Communications Assistant. I’m excited to be joining the team, and can’t wait to dive into the great work everyone here is doing.
Before I joined the Environmental Initiative team, I served with AmeriCorps for a year at Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute, an education nonprofit in the Twin Cities. There, I worked in communications, development, and programming— and fell in love with working for nonprofits. Not only did I have the opportunity to work alongside community members to solve real-time problems they were facing, but I was also surrounded by people who cared as deeply as I did about finding equitable solutions to those problems.
My specific interest in the environmental sector, though, can be traced further back. I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, right on Lake Erie, which has bountiful, beautiful natural resources. Then, I attended college at the University of Michigan, where I studied English and Social Theory and Practice, which is kind of like sociology. As part of my degree, I spent a semester in New Hampshire. Again, I was surrounded by beautiful natural resources, reading and thinking about the effect the environment has on individuals. There, I was struck by just how fragile our environment was, and was continuing to become. I grew increasingly concerned about my impact, and how I could do something to positively affect the environment.
That’s where Environmental Initiative comes in. I’m excited to be working for an organization that is committed to positive, innovative change, and being intentional about who participates in and affects those conversations and changes. I’ve always felt everyone is better when we work together, so I think I’m in the right place. I can’t wait to get started, and I’d love to hear what brings you here.
