MINNESOTA CHEMICAL REGULATION & POLICY project

The Minnesota Chemical Regulation and Policy Project is a stakeholder process involving public and private sector leaders convened to recommend improvements to Minnesota’s approach to chemical regulation, management and policy.

Draft Final Report Now Available for Public Comments

The Work Group for the Minnesota Chemical Regulation and Policy Project has concluded its discussions and approved a Draft Final Report that documents the outcomes from Phase II. The report describes proposals to advance risk assessment, inform decison makers with the best available science, and promote green chemistry in Minnesota. There was no consensus within the Work Group on recommendations to address each of these issues. Neverthless, the project provided a valuable forum for cross-sector dialogue, and the outcomes described in this report will inform ongoing discourse around chemical management and policy in Minnesota and elsewhere.

Environmental Initiative is now soliciting comments on the Draft Final Report. Work Group members and other interested parties should submit comments via email to Ellen Gibson (egibson@environmental-initiative.org) by Friday, May 18, 2012. All comments received will be included in Appendix G of the printed final report that will be released in early June 2012.

Project Background and Description

In 2010, Environmental Initiative convened a diverse Work Group to identify issues and opportunities relevant to state chemicals policy. The second phase of this discussion will result in specific recommendations to improve Minnesota’s approach to regulating and managing chemicals. This dialogue builds upon earlier efforts of diverse stakeholders to identify policy gaps, needs and barriers to making improvements. Learn more »

Over the coming months, stakeholders will develop recommendations regarding Minnesota's system of regulating and managing chemicals with the goal of enabling the state to:

  • Advance public health and environmental protection through the development of effective chemicals policy using a collaborative dialogue with diverse stakeholders;
  • Demonstrate Minnesota’s leadership to advance a collaborative vision for state chemicals policy;
  • Increase public availability of information and educate the public and decision-makers about chemical risk, benefits and management; and
  • Position Minnesota to benefit economically from improved chemical management and green chemistry.

Meetings are open to the public and your input is welcome. The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8.
